Florence, early 16th century. Though celebrated as a genius, Michelangelo is impoverished and struggling to finish the Sistine Chapel ceiling. After the death of his main patron, Pope Julius II, he becomes obsessed with finding the finest marble to complete the Pope’s tomb. Meanwhile, two powerful noble families compete for his loyalty, drawing him into political intrigue and forcing him to lie and maneuver to survive, which gradually torments him with suspicion and hallucinations.
